Ron Wagner

The renowned comic artist will be discussing his legendary run on Marvel’s G.I. Joe series. He is responsible for many of the iconic covers you love, and he’ll be signing and sketching at Assembly Required! You may also get some details about his upcoming project with the legendary Larry Hama.


Joe Declassified

This not-for-profit organization will be sharing a behind-the-scenes look at our favorite action figures. Their exhibit will feature rarely seen prototypes and concept art for unreleased figures. Don’t miss their exciting presentation about Tiger Force and what we got from G.I. Joe in 1988!


Joe Customs

From new recruit to hardened veteran, it’s always a treat to make a custom Joe for your collection. The crew from Joe Customs will have a dedicated room for demos, tips, and advice on how to create your own custom builds. Expect a few surprises from them throughout the day!


the Finest

Members for the 234th Tigerhawks will be back for this year’s Assembly Required! Get your picture taken with some of the best Joe cosplayers in the world and talk about the ins and outs of costuming. This year, they’re bringing a life-size watch tower prop that must be seen to be believed!

Entries will be limited to two customs per person and each must use at least 50% existing Joe parts. Entries must be submitted prior to noon on the day of the event. The winners will be announced at 4:30 p.m. Must be present to win.

Event Details


New location, new space! This year’s Assembly Required will be at Gravitate Coworking in downtown Des Moines! Plus, it’s just around the corner from the Hyatt Place where we have a group rate.

Doors open at 10 a.m. The Grand Prize drawing will be at 5 p.m.

Four-hour metered parking is available along Locust Street, two-hour metered parking is available on 5th Street. Street parking is enforced 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

What started as an idea in a coffee shop has grown into a must-attend event within the G.I. Joe collecting community! Since 2011, Assembly Required has grown from a handful of local collectors to a free gathering of fans from across the country. Our mission is to cultivate an appreciation for G.I. Joe not only in Iowa but also beyond, for the purpose of building community, preserving the brand and investing in the next generation of fans.
